In this workshop, we will immerse ourselves in active translation, creating and exercising our own poetic interpretations. Together we will de-code and re-code a short poem as an exercise in hacking language in the age of digitally generated texts. Through playful attempts at translation, we will explore different ways we can understand, demystify and cipher language and poetics. We will discuss the ways translation efforts and margins of error can hijack mainstream voices, informing new ways of seeing and trace our own relations to the world.
Selected by June Kitahara, the poem, “Wild Geese” by Mary Oliver was used to guide our translation exercise.
The poem was broken into 24 parts, one for each participant.
The image to the right (web-view) shows the broken up poem with notes and sketches of the translations.
Using various translation methods and creative approaches to rendering the text, the group came up with 24 unique translations that collaged the poem back together.
